BS6004 Cable

BS6004 Cable

BS6004 PVC Cable for Domestic and Light Industrial Final Circuits

What BS6004 Covers

Cleveland Cable Company is the UK's largest supplier of BS6004 electrical cable. This British Standard defines the construction and performance of PVC insulated low-voltage cables for fixed wiring. It covers the most common UK building cables used in:

  • Domestic electrical installations
  • Commercial and light industrial fixed wiring
  • Final circuits for lighting, socket outlets and small power

Cable manufactured to BS6004 gives installers and specifiers confidence that it meets a recognised Standard for safety, durability and performance when installed in line with the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671). You will also see BS6004 marked on the cable sheath, together with size, voltage rating and manufacturer details.

Types of Cable the Standard Covers: 6181Y, Twin & Earth, Arctic Grade & Flexible Mains Cable

BS6004 covers several familiar cable types used every day by UK electricians, including:

Fixed Wiring Cable

  • 6181Y: A single-core PVC insulated cable for fixed circuits, typically used in conduit, trunking or for meter tails in appropriate applications. It is suitable for internal fixed wiring where additional mechanical protection is provided.
  • Twin & Earth (e.g. 624-Y): Grey PVC sheathed cable with two PVC insulated live conductors (line and neutral) and a bare CPC (earth). This is the standard Twin & Earth cable for general final electrical circuits.

Arctic Grade

  • Arctic Grade Flexible Cable: Features low-temperature PVC insulation and a PVC sheath that remains flexible in temperatures from -40°C to +70°C. These cables are ideal for powering portable tools and temporary traffic lights, providing reliable performance for both indoor and outdoor installations.

Flexible Mains

  • 6381Y Flexible Cable: PVC cables intended for fixed wiring rather than general-purpose flexible applications. They provide improved handling and flexibility while meeting the construction requirements of BS6004.

Twin & Earth Voltage Rating

Most BS6004 Twin & Earth cables used in domestic wiring are rated at 300/500V. This voltage rating makes them suitable for standard UK low-voltage final circuits when correctly selected and installed.

BS6004 PVC cable is suitable for:

  • 230V single-phase domestic and commercial circuits
  • Fixed wiring where system voltages do not exceed the declared rating and the cable is adequately protected from damage

Always select the correct cable size and type in accordance with BS7671 and the design current of the circuit.

Conductor and Sheath Identification

BS6004 standardises conductor and sheath identification to provide consistent and safe electrical installations.

  • Core insulation colours follow harmonised Brown (line) and Blue (neutral), with a bare CPC (earth) in Twin & Earth cable.
  • The outer sheath is Grey PVC for domestic Twin & Earth and similar fixed wiring cables.

Standardised identification simplifies fault finding, testing and maintenance throughout the life of the installation.

Typical Applications of BS6004 Cable

Domestic Wiring Uses

BS6004 is the standard choice for:

  • General lighting circuits, including loop-in and junction-box wiring
  • Ring final circuits and radial socket circuits
  • Final circuits supplying fixed appliances such as boilers, fans, heaters and extractors (subject to design)

In UK homes, BS6004 cables form the backbone of most concealed fixed wiring, installed within walls, floors and ceilings, clipped direct or installed within suitable containment systems.

Light Industrial Use

Where installation conditions are not harsh and mechanical risks are low, BS6004 PVC insulated cables are also suitable for light industrial and commercial premises.

Typical applications include:

  • Internal wiring of offices, shops, schools and public buildings
  • Fixed wiring in false ceilings, partition walls and trunking systems
  • Final circuits supplying lighting rows, small power outlets and light-duty fixed equipment

Where there is increased mechanical risk, outdoor exposure or chemical exposure, an armoured or specialist cable may be more suitable. However, BS6004 remains a compliant and cost-effective solution for many indoor fixed wiring applications.

Lighting, Sockets and Power Circuits

BS6004 cables are designed for final circuits including:

  • Lighting circuits, including standard, two-way and intermediate switching (often using 6243Y)
  • Socket outlet circuits, including ring and radial circuits in domestic and light commercial installations
  • Small power circuits for immersion heaters and showers when correctly sized and protected

Because BS6004 defines both cable construction and performance, designers and installers can confidently specify these cables for fixed wiring final circuits that comply with UK standards and regulations.
