Formed from a merger between Norwegian company Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and Germany’s Germanischer Lloyd (GL) in 2013, DNV GL became a leading international classification and certification body for the marine industry, oil & gas industry, and energy industries. The cable industry, as do others, continue to refer to products as being DNV-approved.
The two organisations have a long history in regulating the materials used initially in the maritime industry and latterly across a broader industry scope. Similar to the UK’s Lloyd’s Register, DNV and GL were created to evaluate the quality of marine vessels, improve safety on the seas by looking at the construction, design and engineering.
The evaluation process and the seal of approval which is given to compliant products, has expanded to include activities including oil & gas pipelines, renewable energy installations in both offshore and on land.
